A Child Psychiatrist's Philosophy on Medication

Many people come into my office with some uneasy hostility to the process. Their child is in trouble - he may have ADHD or depression, an eating disorder, or a mood disorder. He may be oppositional or have a substance abuse problem; he may have separation anxiety, or struggle with Asperger's. They've been sent to me because somebody told them that this child may need medication. And here's the road.
I would prefer not to medicate anybody. I'm a big believer in psychotherapy, family dynamics and in severe cases, placing the child in a better social environment to help them grow. You want to put as little foreign material in the brain as possible because the mind has its own way of healing.
Yet, I medicate all the time. The parents will come in and they'll be upset. "I knew you were going to recommend medicine" (as if they were here for another purpose). "Can't we do it any other way?" The answer to that is usually no - not if they want it to be as effective as possible. The problem here is that the child is dysfunctional and medication is the only thing that can successfully aid the dysfunction to the fullest extent.
You see, children are a moving target. What you see at age 7 is different than at age 12. If a child has ADD and hasn't been treated within those 5 years, it can be extremely damaging. How many times has he been yelled at by his parents, how many times has he caused disruptions in school, how many times has he frustrated just about anyone? This is hard to deal with. These are precious years for the development of self esteem. So I tell parents that medicine gives them a sense of competence during these years and sometimes it's no longer needed when they're older.http://www.enwikipedia.org
I want this child to feel good about growing up, good about school, good about experiences with family and good about his connections to friends. If medicine can help this along the way, so be it. You have to remember that not treating somebody is also a treatment decision, and not giving medicine that can help is a decision to deprive the child of something that can make things a lot better for them. If you don't have a good alternative, then you may be giving a child a bad experience for years and he may not be able to overcome this. When the parents leave my office, they're sober in the assessments and generally agree to medicate their child. Years later they are usually grateful for the decision. It's a heavy decision to use medicine with your child- but it's a decision that could lead to a better life for your child as well.http://www.enwikipedia.org

Canine Arthritis Medicine

Before you decide to give your dog canine arthritis medicine you should understand what arthritis is and why medication will ease your dog's symptoms.
Arthritis in dogs is just like in humans, it is when a joint becomes inflamed. It can be very painful, swell and become hard to move. Dogs can have different types of arthritis also. Before just giving your dog any type of medication you find at the store, you should have your veterinarian check your dog for signs of arthritis.
Canine arthritis medicine will not make the arthritis go away. There are no cures for arthritis. In severe cases, surgery can be an alternative. But, many medications will relive the pain and swelling associated with arthritis. After your veterinarian has diagnosed your dog with canine arthritis it would be best to find out what medicines he thinks would be best for the type of arthritis you dog is suffering with.
There are many different types of pain killers and anti inflammatory medications that are great in helping your dog. With these medicines your dog will be able to play again and even enjoy life more.
The main thing to remember is that you do not want your best friend suffering with pain if he doesn't have to. He will not be happy and can become worse without the medication. The pain from arthritis will have him lying around and then his joints can become stiffer. He needs to exercise and that is very hard to do, if he is in severe pain.
Luckily, its an ailment that can be treated with treatments such as Arthramine which helps repair the damaged tissue.http://www.medi-cal.ca.gov

Halitosis and Medications

An unpleasant odor on the breath is not always due to a problem in the mouth: many things can cause a transient halitosis and medications are included in the list, along with certain foods and habits such as smoking. Among the drugs, those that tend to cause a dry mouth or nose, antihistamines, antidepressants, and drugs for sinus problems are particularly noted for having this effect. If you are taking any drugs, either prescription drugs or over the counter medicines, and you suspect that you have bad breath, you should read the package insert and consult with your doctor or pharmacist to determine whether there could be a connection between the two.
On the flip side, if you have a severe problem with bad breath, you might benefit from medicine for halitosis. While prescription drugs are seldom used for this purpose, certain antibiotics are effective against the oral bacteria that cause halitosis and medications of this type can be used in some circumstances. Keep in mind that antibiotics have side-effects as well and should be avoided if possible. Try a natural remedy or an over the counter medicine for halitosis before resorting to antibiotics.
Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial agent that is quite effective for reducing the number of odor-producing bacteria in the mouth, thus reducing halitosis and medications often contain this additive. A mouthwash that contains chlorhexidine is likely to help. Other approaches have also been tried in recent years. One popular medicine for halitosis incorporates oxidizing ingredients that expose anaerobic odor-producing bacteria to oxygen. Strict anaerobes can't tolerate oxygen, so this approach should be effective at killing them. A third approach uses the fact that these bacteria tend to stick to oil droplets: rinsing with an oil preparation can remove them from the mouth.
So halitosis and medications can go hand in hand - medicines can cause and treat bad breath. If you are searching for medicine for halitosis, look for something that will kill or remove the bacteria, rather than just covering up the smell. Breath fresheners won't work very well for this. If you have halitosis and medications are the cause, the odor you notice is probably not as offensive as bad breath caused by bacteria in the mouth. Breath mints and ordinary mouthwashes may be effective at masking it. Compare a few products to find out what works best for you.encyclopediamedical.com

Compare a few products to find out what works best for you.

Pain Medication You Can Legally Order Online

Millions of American live with pain. Chronic pain, daily pain, short term severe pain. Of all the medications sold by online pharmacies, by far the most common type is pain relievers. You might think then that online pharmacies are a great source of pain relievers.
Well, did you know the Drug Enforcement Agency of the United States (DEA) has busted and close over 5000 online pharmacies? Did you know that many online pharmacies sell counterfeit medication? Did you know it is a federal crime for you to order prescription drugs from outside the United States?
It is true, online pharmacies are a great source of pain relief medication. This article teaches you to order pain medication legally, from within the United States, with a legal prescription. It's the only way to go!
First, the caveats: You cannot legally order medication from outside the United States, even if you have a prescription. We always hear about the elderly taking buses to Canada to buy cheap medicine. The fact is, as of this writing, this course is illegal. Also, you cannot legally order medicine from a pharmacy without a prescription. Many online pharmacies (including my own) have physicians on staff who review your medication request and write you a prescription if they think it's safe. In addition, NEVER order narcotics through the mail. Forget codeine, Tylenol #3, oxycontin, demerol, percodan and percocet. You can be charged with a federal crime for buying these substances. Lastly, regardless of the medication you buy, be sure to read the package insert (or a monograph on my web site). Drugs interact with each other and with your body- the package insert will tip you off to potentially dangerous behavior with respect to the medication you ordered.
The following are quick summaries of common pain relief drugs you can order through the Internet with very little risk:
Fioricet (butalbital)
Fioricet is a combination drug. It is made up of acetaminophen, caffeine and butalbital. Acetaminophen is the same medication in Tylenol You know caffeine from coffee (or even your favorite candy bar.) Butalbital is a mild barbiturate. It relaxes you.
Medical Science does not have an explanation for the reason this combination of drugs works so well, but the fact is Fioricet (and its generic form butalbital) is highly effective for tension headache. Presumably, it relaxes the muscles in the head and neck which typically tighten during tension headaches.. This is the top selling drug at our pharmacy month after month- it really helps headaches!
Soma (carisoprodol)
Soma is a muscle relaxant. It acts by blocking electrical signals among nerves in the reticular formation of the brain and in the spinal cord. Carisoprodol, combined with rest and physical therapy, is prescribed for the short term relief of painful muscle conditions- particularly muscle spasm (where the muscle tightens and does not relax). Most back strains result in muscle spasm, so patients find carisoprodol highly effective in relieving back pain.
Celebrex (celecoxib)
Celebrex is used in the treatment of symptoms of arthritis. This includes joint pain, stiffness, swelling and inflammation. The medication does not cure arthritis, but does provide symptomatic relief. It s a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which relieves pain and inflammation. The drug works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins contribute to the pain and swelling associated with arthritis.
Ultram (tramadol)
Ultram is used for treatment of moderate to severe chronic pain. It binds to the opiod receptors on nerves (the same mechanism used by narcotics), but it has a far lower potential for dependency. It's the closest medication to a narcotic you can order legally in the US online. It is not a NSAID (nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug) and does not carry the risk of stomach ulceration and internal bleeding which can accompany the use of such medications. It is often prescribed for pain associated with shingles, fibromyalgia and other chronic diseases.
Ulracet
Ultracet is a combination of acetaminophen and tramadol. It is typically prescribed for the short term (up to five days) relief of moderately severe acute pain. It is often prescribed for post-surgical pain or after dental procedures.
The ultram mechanism as described above is very similar to the mechanism employed by narcotics. Acetaminophen of course is the active ingredient in Tylenol. It works by increasing the threshold to pain (i.e. it takes more pain stimulus to cause the sensation of pain). These two drugs work by different mechanisms, and they combine to be more effective than either drug alone.
Pain relief medication can be ordered safely online, but one should exercise appropriate caution before doing so. Specifically, it's important to determine whether you need to see a physician before ordering pain medication. If you have a sudden onset of pain which is not readily explained, you should consult a physician first. If in doubt, go to the emergency room. If however you are a patient who has been diagnosed, and pain is a recurring problem, you can conveniently order pain medication online- typically at a lower cost than the combined cost of a doctor's appointment and the medication itself.
